Anybody who has played any sport involving a ball understands the importance of maintaining visual focus on that ball when it comes to making contact with it. Whether it’s a hand, a foot, a club, a racket, a bat or another ball, the only way to ensure solid contact with the ball is to keep your eyes on it, through the point of impact. Since inception in 2000, Infrastructure Alternatives has encountered a steadily growing market share. This is not by chance; we’ve kept our eye keenly on the ball. The last 14 years of steadily increasing revenues, growth, and market share is a direct result or testament of our adherence to our “hedgehog.”
If you’ve never read Jim Collins’ book Good to Great, the idea of the hedgehog may be unfamiliar to you. I highly recommend reading it, but in essence, a corporate hedgehog includes satisfying three criteria:
- What are we deeply passionate about?
- What can we be the best in the world at?
- What drives our economic engine?
We at Infrastructure Alternatives were introduced to this theory of a “hedgehog” back in late 2005, and meticulously established an IAI hedgehog in early 2006. Since then, it’s been a governor of nearly all business-related decisions. The hedgehog became the ball that we kept our eye on. The answers to the above three questions brought us to establish our major business lines: Contract Operations and Dredging/Dewatering – we are passionate about providing exceptional services in each.
Today, we are a major Midwest regional provider of contract operation services (best in the Midwest, soon to be the world), and the premier geotextile tube dewatering and water treatment contractor in the nation (best in the country, soon to be the world). With each, our economic engine continues to rev comfortably. While the foundation of our corporation may’ve been set in the first five years, keeping our eyes focused on our major markets has allowed us to make solid impact in each respective market in less than 10 years.
We are currently seizing a new wave of momentum in the Contract Operations Division, while at the same time, executing three sizable Dredging/Dewatering projects. With new Contract Operations clients like Marlette, and Haring Township, and the potential for numerous other projects that fit well within our wheelhouse; and continued bid/proposal activity in the Dredging/Dewatering division, we already have a strong backlog established for 2015, and continued opportunities to increase that backlog even further.
This hedgehog isn’t the only idea discussed in Jim Collins’ book; but it was certainly one that impacted IAI from very early on. Maintaining the passion, striving to be the best we can be, and continued focus on tuning our economic engine will result in continuing the trend of the last 14 years. So, while we are currently very good at what we do, keeping our eye on the ball should allow us to achieve the greatness we seek.Share this:
